Dave remembered during the escape through the hot and stuffy tunnel that at one point, for a brief moment, there was a gentle breeze blowing across the tunnel at them. That must mean there was another opening somewhere along the inside of the tunnel that neither Phil nor himself noticed. Dave whispered to Detective Gordon about this idea, and Detective Gordon thought carefully.

Detective Gordon gave instructions for Dave to go back down the tunnel, but this time, he was to take a flashlight and Rusty along with him for safety. Dave hesitated, as he did not like the idea of going down the tunnel again, but the thought of his best friend being in danger gave him determination and courage.

Dave went to the part of the cave where he and Phil had crawled out of the tunnel. This time, Rusty and Dave went down together, and with the flashlight, he could finally see inside the tunnel. He was also glad that he had Rusty for company.

After what seemed like an eternity, he came to where he had felt the breeze and there was indeed another opening. He went through the opening and found that there was a second tunnel that led right to the cavern where Phil was sitting. Phil was cold, tired, hungry, and in pain, but was happy to see Dave. There was no sign of the two men at all, but Phil overheard them saying that they would be returning soon to get him, so Dave had to get Phil out quickly before the men came back and caught them trying to escape

Dave recognized Phil's voice immediately, and started calling excitedly to Detective Gordon. They all started shouting to Phil, hoping that he could hear them. However, they were all just as curious and confused as to how Phil and the men managed to get in, since there did not seem to be any way in.

They tried searching for an opening somewhere, and tried running their hands over the wall, and overturning the rocks to see if there was a secret button or a device which could open the wall, but there was no such luck.

They tried shouting to Phil to tell them how he got in, but either he could not hear them, or they could not understand what he was trying to say. It was a very tense moment as the sun was about to set soon. This would mean that it would get very cold and damp in the cave, and Phil did not have any warm clothing with him. He could freeze to death in there.

As time ticked by, they began to lose hope. Detective Gordon and Dave stood there with their heads hung low in desperation and resignation. A soft breeze was blowing through the cave and Dave shivered with the cold.

Suddenly, Dave froze. He thought of something that might save Phil!

Detective Gordon wasted no time in getting some of his men to dig, and slowly, they uncovered part of the opening to the tunnel. However, none of the men were able to fit into the tunnel this time, and Detective Gordon was not about to make Dave go through the whole ordeal of crawling through it again.

Suddenly, Detective Gordon received a call from the team that was heading towards the cave. It seemed that they found a shoe belonging to a boy.

Leaving the other officers at the hut, Detective Gordon and Dave made their way to the hill, and to the cave.

Once there, Dave saw that it was indeed Phil's shoe, but he did not like what he saw. There were bloodstains on the shoe...

Rusty the police dog, was trusted with the job of finding Phil. He sniffed the shoe and proceeded to trace Phil's scent through the cave. The rest followed closely behind.

All of a sudden, Rusty stopped. He had lost the scent, and in front of them was a wall of rock. There was no other way around it.

They could not go on.

Then they heard it. A faint sound coming from within the wall of rock...

Soon, Dave was leading a team of police officers together with Detective Gordon. Detective Gordon had another team of officers going to the hill where the cave was located, to cut off any escape attempts by the two thugs. As they were driving towards the forest in a patrol car, Dave was hoping that Phil would be alright. He felt that he should not have left him alone with the two thugs, but he had no choice. It was either that, or both of them would be in their clutches right now, without the police being able to find them.  Not long later, they reached the edge of the forest and it was impossible to drive any further. They had to continue on foot. During the escape from the tunnel, Dave dropped the map and now had to find the hut again purely by memory.  A few times, he made some wrong turns and they had to retrace their steps. That wasted precious time. However, eventually, the group came across a path which Dave found very familiar, that led them to the hut. When they went in, there was no sign of the two men or Phil. The hole in the ground had already been covered up, and the footprints were gone.  There was no evidence at all that either Phil or the two men were ever there. It was as though it never happened at all. Had it all been only a dream?

When they reached the station, Dave saw his parents and Phil's parents. They were relieved that Dave was alright, but also very concerned that Phil was still in danger. It seemed that after the boys did not go home for dinner, their parents got worried and called the police. After Dave had a chance to get some food and drink, and got some strength back, he started to tell Detective Gordon about what happened.

When Dave finished his story, Detective Gordon nodded his head and showed him the pictures of two men. Dave immediately recognized one of them as the man who was chasing Phil and himself. He did not manage to see the face of the man in the tunnel. He found out from Detective Gordon that the men were wanted for a series of crimes including armed robbery, smuggling and kidnapping. Also, they would not hesitate to use Phil as a hostage to negotiate terms, and would not hesitate to harm Phil if they needed to.

As Dave heard this, his eyes opened wide in shock and surprise. Phil and Dave had stumbled upon their hideout, and now, Phil was in the clutches of two very dangerous men. Before Dave could do or say anything, Detective Gordon got up and motioned for Dave to follow him.

He asked Dave to lead the police to the hideout quickly as Phil was in serious danger.
