1884年，一位名叫艾勃特（Edwin  A.Abbott，1838----1926）的英国牧师写了一本小册子，书名叫做《二维国》（Flatland）。他写这本书的目的何在呢？是为了借一个子虚之地来针贬现实的社会？是为了从阵营内部猛揭一下宗教阶层的疮疤？是为了别开生面地宣讲生命的惊人适应性？是为了揭示实现认识突破的艰难以及歌颂人们追求这种突破的努力？都有可能。但可以肯定他说，无论作者的真实目的如何，这本书实际上成了第一本构想种种不同维数的物质世界，并科学地讨论它们之间的关系的科普著作。
