Indeed, many employers actually hold back the full amount that they are prepared top offer a position because they are expecting a salary negotiation and so they are expecting you to ask for more money and you are not going to get the full value of the job unless you do ask for more money. In addition, there are lots of things that employers can do very easily that might make your life better but they are not going to cost them anything. So for example, they maybe willing to do flextime to let you start later so that you can work better with your daycare arrangements for your children. It doesn't mean anything to them but it means the world to you in terms of how well the job goes for you.
