Toll 就是指收费的意思，像是高速公路上的收费站就是叫 Toll station。Take its toll 是一个片语，在电视新闻上常听到。字面上是说对某样东西收费，其实指的就是造成某些东西的损失，on 后面接的名词就是指损失的东西。最近美国是龙卷风跟暴风雨的季节，所以新闻上常可以听到播报员这么说 "The thunder strom took its tolls on human lives."
