Laos - Land 寮国 - 地理

Hello friends. Welcome to Window on the World. Today we'll continue our trip around Southeast Asia and visit the Lao People's Democratic Republic. It is better known as Laos. This country is bordered on the north by China and Vietnam, on the east by Vietnam, on the south by Cambodia, on the west by Thailand, and on the northwest by Myanmar. Laos is Southeast Asia's only landlocked nation. A landlocked country is one that is completely surrounded by land. The total land area is 236,800 sq km. The capital and largest city of Laos is Vientiane.

Laos is very mountainous. The country can be divided into a northern section that has very thick forests and narrow valleys. The southern section has less trees in its mountain area. The Mekong River which is the main river of Laos, enters the country in the northwest from Thailand. It then flows south along the Laos-Thailand border, and enters Cambodia in the southwest. The Mekong River is the longest river in Southeast Asia. It is 4, 184 KM long. It is used for fishing, transportation, and to make electricity.

Laos is a country that has a tropical climate. It is usually warm and rainy. The wet summer season begins in May and lasts until October. During this time, Laos receives about 1778 mm of rain. A dry, cool season begins in November and lasts until February.

We must close our Window on the World for now. Do listen next week, friends, when we'll learn all about the people of Laos. Goodbye for no

Greetings, Friends! It's time for Window on the World! We are learning about the country of Laos. Today, we'll find out about the people who live there. The population of Laos is about 4,975,800 people. There are three main groups of people who make their homes in Laos. The largest group is composed of Lao, who are closely related to the Thai people. The Lao make up about half of the population. They live mainly along the Mekong River. Another group of people are called ¨Mountain People〃 and they live in the highlands. There is also a small group of Vietnamese and Chinese people who live in the northern mountains.
The official language is Lao. It is very similar to the Thai and Burmese languages. Some older people may speak French. English and Vietnamese are also spoken by some people.
The people of Laos have large families. The average family may have about 7 family members. Sometimes you will find that grandparents or aunts and uncles may live with a family. The oldest man is the head of the family. He usually represents the family at village meetings. The Lao have great respect for their parents and elders. A sign of greeting and respect is called the NOP. A person will fold their hands as if they were praying and place them near the chest level. Then, bow slightly to show respect for an older person. The NOP is also used to show someone your thanks. If you were to visit a Lao home, you would remove your shoes and leave them outside the house. You should also remember to bring a small gift to your hosts when you visit.
It is time to close our Window on the World. The people of Laos are very interesting. Next week, we'll find out about the foods that they enjoy. I hope you will listen. Goodbye for now.

Hello, friends. Let's open our Window on the World again on Laos. We have learned about the land, climate and people. Today, let's find out about their food. The main food for our friends in Laos is rice. Most Asian people do enjoy eating rice with their meals. Rice is the main crop that is grown in Laos. The rice is usually served with chili sauce or a spicy fish sauce. Much of the food is very spicy. One dish you might want to try is called LAP. It is meat that is cooked with onions, lemon grass, (a lemon-tasting herb), and other spices. Other foods that are eaten include fish, eggs, chicken, pork, and occasionally, beef. Popular beverages are coffee and tea.
If you were to visit a home in Laos, you would sit on a mat on the floor to eat. As a sign of respect for you as their guest, the host and family would not raise their heads higher than yours. They never want to offend anyone. Most Lao eat using a fork in their left hand and a spoon in their right hand. They do often eat rice with their fingers.
I hope you have learned something new today about Laos. Next week we'll find out about the many different animals that live in Laos.
Goodbye for now, friends. I'll be waiting for you!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Window on the World. This is our last week to find out about the country of Laos. Today, we'll find out about the many animals that live in the forest-covered mountains of Laos. The Asian elephant is found here and also in other Southeast Asian countries. Did you know that an elephant can gather food for about 18 hours a day? It can eat about 150 kg of fruit and leaves. Elephants usually live for about 40 years. The rain forests are also the home for panthers, leopards, tigers and wild boars. You could also see interesting birds like the falcon, the osprey, and the great spotted woodpecker. If you are interested in snakes, you will find 2 rather large ones in Laos. The largest venomous snake is the King Cobra. Venomous snakes are deadly because of the poison in their fangs. The King Cobra can grow to be about 5 meters long. I know I will stay away from the King Cobra because it is able to strike or attack its victim from a distance! Another snake found in Laos is the Indian Python. This snake is known as a constrictor. It means that it will kill its prey by squeezing it to death. Once the animal is dead, the python will then swallow it. The Indian Python is able to kill an animal as large as a goat and then swallow it! That sounds like a very strong snake! I really don't like snakes so I will be sure to stay away from the rain forests of Laos! It is time to close our Window on the World for today. I hope you have learned many interesting things about Laos. Do listen again next week as we continue to find out about another country in Southeast Asia. Farewell, friends!

Welcome to Window on the World. I hope you are well, friends. This week we will learn about Cambodia, another Southeast Asian country. The country's official name is the Kingdom of Cambodia. The capital is Phnom Penh. Cambodia is 181,040 square kilometers in size. The population is approximately 10,251,000 people. Cambodia's neighbors are Laos on the northeast, Vietnam on the east and southeast, the Gulf of Thailand is on the southwest, and Thailand is on the west and northwest. The land of Cambodia is flat in the central part of the country. There are mountains in the southwest near the flat area, called a plain. The Mekong River flows from north to south through Cambodia. A large lake called the "Great Lake" is in the center of the country.  The climate of Cambodia is very warm and tropical. It has a rainy season that begins in April and continues until October. The average temperature is about 25 degrees celsius. The average rainfall can be about 1,400 millimeters in the plains to about 3,800 millimeters in the mountains.  Next week, we'll learn about the Cambodian people. I hope you will join us then when we open our Window on the World. Goodbye for now, friends.

Hello and welcome to Window on the World. We are learning all about the Kingdom of Cambodia. This week we'll learn about the Cambodian people. The population of Cambodia is approximately 10,251,000. The official language is Khmer which is very similar to Thai and Lao. French is sometimes used to communicate with officials and traders. English is understood in a few areas, and is becoming more popular in the cities.  Families have an average of 5 children. Several generations usually live together or near one another. The elderly are cared for by their children. Some families are often willing to adopt orphaned children. An orphaned child is someone whose mother and father have died. The bonds of love formed through adoption are very important.  Visiting is encouraged by relatives but Cambodians are careful when inviting stangers into their homes. If you are invited to visit, be sure to remove your shoes when you enter the home. As a houseguest you may be greeted with a bouquet of jasmine flowers. Guests are given the best place to sit.  People enjoy soccer, table tennis, volleyball, and badminton. They like to dance, play music, and sing. People also enjoy festivals and weddings. A wedding may last a full day. There are many guests, abundant food, and plenty of music. The Cambodian people are very interesting. I hope you'll be listening next week when we find out about the foods they enjoy.  Farewell for now, friends.

Greetings friends. Welcome to Window on the World. We have been learning about Cambodia. This week we will find out about the foods that the Cambodian people enjoy. Many Cambodians are farmers and they grow much of their own food. Some things they grow are rice, maize, corn, and vegetables. If you were to eat a meal in a Cambodian home, you might enjoy soup and rice. A bowl of soup may have any combination of fish, eggs, vegetables, meat, and spices. More than 20 years ago, Cambodia was known as "the cradle of rice," and many different varieties were grown. Rice is prepared in many ways and is eaten at every meal. Vegetables and a wide variety of fruits are available throughout the year. Seafood and fish are also common. Cambodians eat with chopsticks, spoons, and their fingers, depending on the food. Cambodian food is less spicy than in neighboring countries like Thailand.

I think I might enjoy the Cambodian foods since they are not very spicy. Learning more about other countries on Window on the World is very interesting to me. I hope you are also learning many new things. Please join me next week when we find out about the animals of Cambodia. Goodbye, for now, friends.

It's time to open our Window on the World. Hello, Friends...I'm so glad that you are listening today. Today, we'll learn about the animals of Cambodia. We have heard about many of these animals because they also live in other Southeast Asian countries.  There are several beautiful large cats that make their home in Cambodia. One is the tiger and the other is the leopard. Tigers have orange and black striped coats while leopards are yellow and black spotted cats. Other mammals include the wild boar which has very long tusks.  The boars will use their tusks to dig for food in the ground. A small fun-loving animal is the Eurasian Otter. This animal loves to swim and play in the water. The Asian Black Bear can also be found in Cambodia. This bear is also called the ¨Moon Bear〃 because it has a white moon shape on its chest.  Two large birds can be found in Cambodia. One is the Peregrine Falcon. This bird can fly as fast as 100 kilometers per hour. It has strong claws that can kill its prey. The Osprey is another bird that can use its claws to catch fish. It flies over water and can grab a fish right out of the water! These are amazing birds, aren't they?  Of course, you can find 2 large snakes living in Cambodia, too. One is the King Cobra. This is the largest poisonous snake in the world. The other snake is the Indian Python. The python can grow to be more than 6 meters long and weigh about 45 kilograms. That is one big snake! You know that I don't like snakes, don't you? I think we'll close our Window on the World for now. Do plan to listen again next week when we find out about a new country! I'll be waiting here for you!

Welcome to Window on the World. Today we will travel to an archipelago. Have you ever heard that word before? An archipelago is a chain of islands and the one we will learn about is the Republic of the Philippines. There are more than 7100 islands that make up the Philippines. The chain of islands is 1600 kilometers long and 480 kilometers wide. There are eleven large islands and the two largest are Luzon in the north and Mindanao, in the south. The islands are surrounded by the waters of the Philippine Sea, the Celebes Sea and the South China Sea. The capital of this country is Manila and many people live in this large city.  The Philippine Islands are located in an area that is called the "Ring of Fire" because of the many volcanoes that are there. The islands were formed by volcanoes many years ago. There are about 20 active volcanoes in the Philippines today. The islands also experience earthquakes. The many mountains give the country a beautiful landscape. The highest mountain is Mount Apo which rises 2953 meters in the air.  The climate is very tropical because the Philippines is close to the equator. It usually rains year round. They do have 2 seasons- a dry season and a rainy season. Heavy rains, called monsoons often cause flooding. Typhoons can also cause problems with the strong winds and rains. If you plan to visit our friends in the Philippines, be sure to travel during the drier season to enjoy sunny days.  Next time, when we open our Window on the World, we'll learn about the friendly Filipino people. Goodbye for now. Adios!

Hello! "Kumusta Ka Na?" How are you? That is how our friends in the Philippines might greet you. Today, our Window on the World opens again on the archipelago of the Philippines. Let's find out about the people who live there.  The people today have been greatly influenced by others who lived on the islands. Malaysian, Spanish and Americans had traveled to the Philippines long ago. The Spanish had even ruled the Philippines for about 330 years. You can see the Spanish influence in the last names of the people today. 1998 marks the 100th anniversary of the Philippines' independence from Spanish rule.  The most important thing to the Filipino people today is having a strong family. Children are taught to be very loyal to their families. Each family member loves and cares for the others. Children show great respect to their parents and grandparents. They always try to bring honor to their family.  Education is also very important to the Filipino people. All children must go to school from the age of seven until they are twelve. Many continue on to high school and college. The students enjoy sports like baseball, basketball and "sipa" a game like volleyball but played using their feet and not their hands. Another favorite past time is going to the movies. The Filipinos have a very large movie making industry. Can you believe there are more than 100 movie theaters in Manila? If you like to have fun and eat lots of great foods, you could also go to a fiesta. We'll find out more about the foods next time when we open our Window on the World. Until next week, farewell friends!

Greetings! I hope you are ready to find out all about the different foods from the Philippines today as we open our Window on the World. We have been learning about the land and the people of this interesting country.  Our Filipino friends enjoy getting together for fun, dancing and delicious foods. A food that many people enjoy is rice. One tasty way to prepare it is with lots of garlic! A typical meal would include the garlic rice, fried fish and vegetables. You might also enjoy trying "adobo" a stew of chicken or pork that is cooked with soy sauce, vinegar and more garlic! Roasted meats like pork, chicken and goat are also delicious. Seafood and fish, like tuna and crabs, are also available in the waters near the islands. A popular dessert is "halo halo." It is made with sweetened beans, milk, fruits, young coconut and crushed ice. It is made in a tall clear glass to show off the colorful layers. It is very cool and refreshing!  Tropical fruits are grown in the warm climate of the Philippines. You can find bananas, star apples, mangoes, papayas, coconuts, pineapples, oranges and sugar cane. Other good foods include corn, yams, sweet potatoes, and cassava.  I know you would enjoy the tasty foods of the Philippines. Next week we will find out all about the animals and plants from the islands. See you next time. Goodbye friends!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Window on the World. Today we will visit the Republic of Korea which is also known as South Korea. South Korea occupies the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It is located in East Asia. Its size is 99,020 square kilometers or about three times larger than Taiwan. South Korea's neighbors are North Korea to the north, the Sea of Japan to the east, the Korea Strait to the southeast and south, and the Yellow Sea to the west. The capital city of South Korea is Seoul.

South Korea features a rugged and mountainous terrain, particularly in its eastern and south-central regions. The main mountain range lies north to south on the east coast of the country. There are plains or flatter lands along the western coast. South Korea's two longest rivers are the Naktong and Han-gang. The Naktong River flows south to the Korea Strait. The Han-gang River flows northwest to the Yellow Sea.

South Korea has 2 types of climates: cold, dry winters and hot, rainy summers. The average winter temperature is -5 Celsius and the average summer temperature is 25Celsius. The yearly summer rainfall is about 1,015 millimeters. Late-summer typhoons bring strong winds and heavy rains that often strike the southern coast.

It is time to close our Window on the World for this week. Do listen again next week when we'll find out about the South Korean people. I hope you'll be listening friends! Goodbye for now!

Hello again and welcome to Window on the World. Each week we find out interesting things about different countries around the world. Today we will learn about the people from the Republic of Korea which is also known as South Korea. About one-quarter of all South Koreans live in the capital, Seoul. A small group of Chinese people do live in South Korea but the rest of the population is made up of Koreans. The population is about 45 million people. The main language is Korean. The language uses numerous Chinese words. Older people may also speak Japanese as a second language. English is taught in the schools, and many people have a good understanding of it.

Family is very important in South Korea. The family is bound together by a strong sense of duty and obligation among its members. The father is the head of the family; he and the eldest son receive the greatest respect. The elderly members of a family are also shown great respect. Sons are expected to take care of their aging parents.

When you meet someone from South Korea, you will receive the traditional greeting, a gentle nod. A slight bow would show respect, too. Sometimes a nod is often followed by a handshake. The left hand may support or rest under the right forearm during the handshake to show respect. Women shake hands less often than men. Young children bow or nod when greeting adults. A common greeting is Annyong haseyo?, which means "Are you at peace?". Young children often greet each other with a simple Annyong?

If you are invited into a home in South Korea, you should remove your shoes upon entering. You might find that in traditional Korean homes guests are seated on cushions on floors that are heated from below. Men sit cross-legged and women tuck their legs to one side behind them. The guest receives the warmest or best position. Guests invited for a meal or party usually bring a small gift in appreciation, often something that can be served at the gathering. Refreshments are usually served, and it is impolite to refuse them.

The South Korean people do enjoy sports. Soccer and baseball are the most popular spectator sports. Koreans also enjoy boxing, basketball, golf, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Walking is a popular activity, and the mountains provide opportunities for skiing and mountain climbing. The national sport is the martial art tae kwon do.

We must close our Window on the World for today. Listen next week to find out about the foods our South Korean friends enjoy. Farewell for now friends.

Welcome to Window on the World. We have been learning about many countries in the Asia Pacific region. Today, we will discover new things about the foods of South Korea. I believe that you know about one food that is eaten by many people in Asian countries. What do you think it is? Did you guess...rice? I am sure that you did. In South Korea, rice, is often combined with red beans or vegetables, and kimchˇi, which is a spicy pickled cabbage. You would find that these foods are served with most meals. Korean cooking uses a lot of spices. Soup is often part of a meal, and chicken, beef, and fish are commonly eaten. A favorite food is bulgog?. This is strips of tasty marinated and then barbecued beef. Barley tea is served with most meals. Fruit is popular as a dessert.

If you were invited to a meal, you would most likely use chopsticks to eat with. Chopsticks and spoons are the most commonly used utensils. At a dinner party, the meal will usually be served before socializing or lots of talking begins. Food items are passed and beverages are poured with the right hand. When holding a glass to receive a beverage, it is polite to use both hands.

I do believe you would enjoy visiting our South Korean friends. They enjoy having guests and eating meals together. We must close our Window on the World for now. Next week we will learn about the animals that live in South Korea. Goodbye for now, friends.

It is time for Window on the World. I am so glad you are listening today. We have been learning about the country of South Korea. Here are some interesting facts about the animals you might find there.

Several animals that can be found in South Korea also live in other Asian countries. One large cat that we have found in this region is the leopard. The leopard is remarkably accepting of people, but people donˇt seem to appreciate leopards. They like to eat goats, sheep, and dogs and that makes farmers angry. Hunters often try to kill the leopards because of their splendid spotted coats. They are beautiful but dangerous wild cats.

Another animal found here is the Asian Black Bear. This bear also lives in Cambodia and Vietnam. This is the bear that is sometimes called the moon bear because of the white moon shape on their chests. The Asian Black Bear is an endangered animal and should be protected.

A small deer from northern and eastern Asia that does not have antlers is called the musk deer. It has small tusks in place of antlers. The musk deerˇs large hind legs make it extremely quick. It can leap high and make sharp turns while running. The musk deer is nocturnal. A nocturnal animal always sleeps in the day time and eats at night. Musk deer eat grass, moss, small branches and twigs.

There are several large birds that live in South Korea. One is the Oriental White Stork. It is also known as the eastern white stork. This large bird stands a little over 1 meter tall and can fly as fast as 77 kilometers per hour. It lives in open country and forests in Asia and mainly eats fish, frogs, snails, and small rodents. This bird is also an endangered animal. Another large bird you might find in South Korea is the Whooper Swan. Although this bird is very graceful on the water, the heavy whooper swan requires long stretches of open water to take off and land, and it moves poorly in the air. It makes a bugle-like call when flying. The Whooper Swan eats mostly plants that grow in the water but will also eat tadpoles and small fish.

The animals of South Korea have been very interesting. I hope you have enjoyed learning about South Korea. Join us next week when we open our Window on the World again. Goodbye friends!

Hello friends! Welcome back to Window on the World. This week we will travel together to North Korea. It is also known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. North Korea is located in East Asia. Its neighbors are China on the north, Russia on the northeast, the Sea of Japan on the east, South Korea in the south and the Yellow Sea in the west.

North Korea has an area of 120,540 square kilometers. It is about one third the size of Japan. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. The country has low mountains and deep valleys. Most mountains spread from the northeast to the southwest across North Korea. There is a large area of lowland plains or flatter land near the country's west coast. This is the area where most of the people live.

North Korea has a continental climate. This means that it has hot summers and cold snowy winters. The average summer rainfall is about 1000 millimeters each year. The summer temperatures are about 24 degrees Celsius and the winter temperatures are about 4 degrees Celsius.

The longest river found in North Korea is the Yalu. It forms part of the country's border with China. Most of the rivers start in the mountains and flow west to the Yellow Sea. Only one river, the Tumen, flows east and then reaches the Sea of Japan.

Next week when we open our Window on the World, we'll discover some interesting facts about the people of North Korea. I hope you will be listening. Goodbye my friends.

Greetings, friends! It's time to open our Window on the World. Last week we began a study on North Korea. Today, we'll learn about the people who live there. The population of North Korea is about 23,917,000. The Korean language is the main language. Russian, Chinese, and English are taught as second languages in the schools. All children must attend school for 10 years. There are about 5,000 primary schools in North Korea. Once a child finishes primary school there is an opportunity to attend one of the 4,000 secondary schools.

The North Korean people are actively encouraged to participate in sports. Soccer is the national sport. A second very popular sport is table tennis which is also called ping pong. Families enjoy going on outings and picnics together in the parks, especially on Sundays. This is the workers' day of rest. Many people also enjoy attending plays, opera, and movies. Watching television is also popular.

If you were to visit a North Korean family, it is considered polite and a sign of respect for guests to bring a small gift to the host. When you give the gift, you should hold it in both hands and then present it. Don't forget to take off your shoes before entering the house. In some places, you may even find that slippers are provided for you. Remember to always bow when you meet someone in North Korea. This is a sign of respect, too.

I'm sure you would be a very respectful guest if you were visiting in North Korea. It is time to close our Window on the World for today. Please tune in next time when we'll learn about the foods you could eat in North Korea. I'll be waiting for you. Goodbye for now, friends.

Eating with your fingers is considered very impolite. Because parents must often work from early morning until later in the evening, families don't often get the opportunity to eat together.

When people do meet together for a meal, there are two things you will almost always find that our North Korean friends will serve. One is rice and the other is a spicy pickled cabbage called ¨kim chi.〃 Other foods you could enjoy include spicy vegetables, soups, fish. A favorite food of North Koreans is a cold noodle dish called naengmyon.

As a visitor to a North Korean home, you would be given the largest piece of meat or the best beverage. It is very important for the host to show great respect to his guests. I think you would enjoy the foods of North Korea. I would probably need a very large glass of water to drink if the foods are too spicy!

Now, as we close our Window on the World, remember to listen again next week when we learn all about the animals that live in the country of North Korea. I hope you will be listening. Farewell for now, friends.

Hello again, friends. It's time to open our Window on the World. We have been learning many new things about the country of North Korea. This week we'll find out about the animals that can be found there.

There are several different kinds of mammals that make their homes in North Korea. Two interesting kinds of dogs are the gray wolf and the red fox. The gray wolf is known to howl loudly at night. The red fox is known for its red coat. Another large animal is the wild boar or wild pig. It can weigh up to 180 kilograms as an adult boar. It has long tusks that are used to dig for roots, nuts and fruits. The red deer lives in the forests of North Korea. This animal is named for its red fur coat. The red deer has very long legs and can run quickly. The male red deer can be quite large, weighing up to 227 kilograms.

Two interesting birds are the peregrine falcon and the long-eared owl. The peregrine falcon is a bird that can fly about 100 kilometers per hour. It has the ability to dive in mid-air to kill its food. The long-eared owl has excellent hearing and fantastic eyesight. The long-eared owl is a nocturnal bird. It sleeps during the day and then hunts at night for mice to eat.

I hope you have enjoyed learning all about the animals of North Korea. Next week we'll discover more about another interesting country when we open our Window on the World. I'll be waiting for you, friends. Goodbye for now!

Welcome friends to Window on the World. Today we will begin a study on the People's Republic of China. This is a very large country in Asia. Let's start with information about the land. China's capital is Bejing. It is bordered by Mongolia and Russia on the north; Russia and North Korea on the northeast; the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea on the east; the South China Sea, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, India, Bhutan, and Nepal on the south; and Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan on the west. China includes more than 2,900 offshore islands, in the South China Sea.. The area of China is 9,596,960 square kilometers. The country is slightly larger than the United States.

Although much of China is mountainous, the country can be divided into six major geographic regions. The Northwest region contains a large sandy desert where sand dunes rise to a height of about 100 meters. The second region is the Mongolian Borderland. It is in north central China. It has mainly sandy, stony, or gravel deserts. There are also flat rolling plains. A third region in the Northeast is the Manchurian Plain. It has broad valleys and gentle slopes that extend to the south, and is noted for its good natural harbors. The fourth region is North China. It has fertile soils and two mountain areas. There is also a rocky coast that provides some good natural harbors. Another region is South China. This region also has soiland some rugged mountains. This area is known for farming. The last region is called the Tibetan Plateau. This region near Tibet has the world's highest plateau region. You could find the Himalayas in this region.

China also has 3 major rivers. The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia and a major transportation route. The Huang He is a second river. It is called ¨China's Sorrow〃 because of its terrible flooding throughout history. The third river is called the Xi Jiang. This is a very important river in southern China. Each of these rivers flows from west to east to the Pacific Ocean.

China has a variety of climates. In the summertime, warm, moist air flows inland from the Pacific Ocean, which produces cyclones. This brings much rain. Summer temperatures average 26 degrees Celsius while winter temperatures range from 18 degrees Celsius in the south to about 4 degrees Celsius along the Yangtze River. Between July and November, typhoons bring high winds and heavy rains too. North China experiences a cold, dry winter. January temperatures range from about -10 to 4 degrees Celsius.

As you can tell, China is a very interesting country. Next week, we'll learn all about the people who live there. I hope you will join me then when we open our Window on the World! Goodbye for now friends.

Hello again, friends and welcome to Window on the World. We are learning about the People's Republic of China. The Chinese have one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations. Today, China's population is the largest of any country in the world. It is estimated that the population is over 1.5 billion people.

The people of China speak Standard Chinese which is based on the Mandarin dialect. This is the national language and is spoken by the majority of the population. Many other dialects are also spoken, including Cantonese, Fukinese, and Hakka in southern China. Chinese is written in characters. There are about 8,000 characters currently in use. Basic literacy requires a knowledge of 1,500 to 2,000 characters.

The family has always been important to the Chinese. A Chinese wedding is very simple. A couple joins family and friends in a marriage celebration. A woman usually keeps her given name and does not take the family name of her husband. Sons are highly valued and they are expected to provide for their parents in their old age.

A Chinese home is usually small. Small apartments are common in cities, while simple dirt?floor houses are common in rural areas. In the cities, most housing is owned by the government. Many families often save for many years to build their own homes. Having a house is a symbol of a better life. Most people also want their children to be well educated. Parents hope that their children will be successful when they are grown.

The people enjoy attending the theater, operas, ballets, and films. An average Chinese person may attend more than 10 cultural events each year. Sports are also popular. Favorites include table tennis, swimming, and soccer. Parks and courtyards are often filled in the morning by people who practice t'ai chi, a traditional form of shadowboxing that provides exercise and meditation. People also enjoy gathering to play cards and table games. A game that began in China, is majiang. This is the nation's most popular table game.

There are so many interesting things to learn about the people of China. We hardly have enough time for all of it! I hope you will listen again next week when we continue to find out about the foods that the people enjoy. Farewell for now friends!

Greetings, my friends and welcome to Window on the World. We are learning about the People's Republic of China. This is also known as Mainland China. Today we'll find out about the foods that the people enjoy. The foods the people eat depend on what is grown in the region where they live. People usually eat dishes with potatoes, tofu, corn meal, and rice. Noodles are also common and steamed bread is a staple in northern China. Dishes made with pork, beef, chicken, or fish are popular but expensive. Sauces are mixed with vegetables and meats and eaten with rice. There are some special foods that are found in the different regions. One popular dish is Beijing duck and another is the spicy foods from the Sichuan province. Fruits and vegetables are also eaten.

Chopsticks are used for all meals in China. Food is placed at the center of the table. Often, more than one type of main dish is served which is then eaten with rice. Rice is served in a small bowl, which is then held close to the mouth for eating. When finished, a person places the chopsticks neatly on the table. They are not left in the rice bowl. Soup is served towards the end of a meal, except in Guangdong province, where soup is served as the first course. If you were at a restaurant, you might see a tray that revolves or turns, placed in the center of the table . This allows guests to sample from several dishes.

If you are invited to someone's home in China, it is important to be on time. It is considered impolite if you are more than a few minutes late. Guests are usually calm and quiet and do not speak loudly. When visiting you might want to bring a small gift to give to the host. Friends often bring gifts such as tea, fruit, chocolates, or cake when they visit. Hosts rarely open wrapped gifts until visitors leave.

I'm sure you would enjoy the foods of China. They are very different from region to region. Next week, listen again to find out about the animals from Mainland China. I'll be waiting for you until then! Farewell, friends.

Welcome to Window on the World. Each week we discover so many interesting things about countries around the world. This is our final week to learn about China. Today we will focus on the animals that make their homes in Mainland China.

You can find such a large variety of animals there. I was surprised to find many different kinds of birds. Did you know that there are two different types of owls that live in China? They are the Long?eared Owl and the Snowy Owl. The Long Eared Owl has large ears that provide it with excellent hearing. It also has fantastic eyesight. It can spot a mouse 600 meters away. The Snowy Owl is totally white. It can completely camouflage or hide itself in the snowy landscape of northern China. It has feathers that covers its legs and powerful claws.

Several other interesting birds are the Golden Oriole, the Hoopoe, and the Bearded Vulture. The Golden Oriole is colored with gold and black feathers. The Hoopoe has a large fan-shaped crest on its head and a black and white striped tail. It often has a very foul-smelling nest! The Bearded Vulture is magnificent in flight. It has a 3-meter wingspan and can reach speeds of 130 kilometers per hour. Another flying creature is the Long?eared Bat. It is small and usually seen at night. It eats small insects while flying but often saves larger insects to eat later. The Long-eared Bat has a bag of skin stretched between its legs, that is used to store the bigger insects for eating later.

Besides birds, you will also find a variety of mammals. Do you remember that mammals are animals that have hair or fur and feed milk to their babies? Some larger mammals are the Tiger, Wild Cat, Elk, Wild Boar, Red Fox, Red Squirrel, Sika Deer, the Siberian Ibex and the Common Hamster. The Elk is a huge member of the deer family. It is a tireless runner that can outrun a horse. The male Elk has enormous antlers. It uses them for fighting other animals and can often kill a wolf or bear. The Siberian Ibex is a wild goat of the high Himalaya Mountains. It can be found at elevations of up to 5,000 meters. It often roams in herds of 20 to 40. The ibex uses its long, broad, knotted horns for fighting off attacks by leopards, wolves, and bears. The Sika Deer is a spotted deer and often rare or hard to find in China. It weighs up to 110 kilograms. The Common Hamster is about 36 centimeters long. This wild hamster is larger than hamsters that are sometimes sold as pets. It can dig a hole or burrow up to 24 meters deep, where it hibernates or sleeps most of the winter. In the springtime, it gathers seeds and nuts at night. The Common Hamster then stores its food in its large cheek pouches.

Two interesting reptiles found in China are the Green Toad and the Chinese Alligator. Remember that reptiles have scales and no fur or hair. They are often egg-layers. The Green Toad has brilliant green blotches covering its dull?colored body. They live in ponds and are found in the spring and summer. The male Green Toads sing to attract the females. The chirping sound is loud and can be heard a mile away. The other larger reptile is the Chinese alligator. It is the only alligator of the Eastern Hemisphere. It lives exclusively on the lower stretch of the Yangtze River. The Chinese alligator eats turtles, and small? to medium?size animals, including chickens and dogs. Adults grow to about 2 meters in length and have a short snout or nose. Chinese alligators have been hunted for their meat and skin.

There are so many interesting animals that live in China! I really learned so much about them! I hope you did too! Please join me again next week when we open our Window on the World on a new country! Goodbye for now, friends!

Hello, my friends and welcome to Window on the World. Today we'll look at a country in East Asia. Mongolia is a landlocked country. Landlocked means that it is completely surrounded by other countries...no oceans or other large bodies of water. Mongolia's neighbors are Russia to the north and China to the east, south, and west. It has an area of 1,566,500 square kilometers. The population is about 2,410,000 people.

Mongolia is mainly a flat land with rising mountain ranges in the north and west. The Gobi Desert covers a wide dry area of the land in the central and southeast areas. Mongolia's climate has temperatures ranging from -30 to -15 Celsius in winter and 10 to 27 Celsius in summer. The winters are usually dry, and summer rainfall is only 380 millimeters in the mountains and 125 millimeters in the desert. Most of Mongolia's land is really either pasture or areas that have a little grass for animals to eat or desert regions. A desert is an area that has mostly sand and very few trees or plants.

As you can tell, Mongolia is a rather large country. It's climate is usually dry because of the large desert area. Listen again next week, when we'll learn about the people who live in Mongolia. Goodbye for now, friends.

The father is the head of the family, but the mother is responsible for household affairs. The Mongol men take the job of herding animals. Elderly parents often live with the family of their youngest son or daughter if there are no sons. Grandparents are treated with great respect because of their wisdom and life experience. The grandparents also pass on their wisdom to their grandchildren. Families who live in the cities, often have both the mothers and fathers working outside the home. Young families in city areas usually have only one or two children. The rural or village families are usually quite a bit larger.

Most rural families live in a tent with a roof frame, and a south-facing door. Its average size is about 6 meters in diameter. The tent is covered with one or more layers of sheep-wool felt and a white cloth. It is easy to put up and take down. This tent is very warm in cold seasons. In city areas, families live in high-rise apartments. Some people in cities even use tent-type buildings. This will have electricity, but not a heating system or running water.

Guests are welcomed in Mongol homes. There is a long tradition of hospitality. Guests are usually greeted by the host and family members at the door in modern apartment buildings, or, in rural areas, outside the tent. Guests often bring the hosts a small gift.

I think it would be interesting to visit a home in Mongolia. I hope you will listen again next week when we find out about the kinds of foods our Mongol friends might serve us. I'll be waiting for you then. Farewell, friends!

Greetings, friends. I'm so glad you are listening to Window on the World. Today we'll continue to find out more about the country and people of Mongolia. The majority of the people live mainly in the central and eastern areas of the country. There are about 9 different groups of Mongol people. Each group has their own dialect or language and traditions.

Most Mongols believe that families are important. In rural or village areas, families are often farmers or shepherds. The youngest son inherits the family home. The father is the head of the family, but the mother is responsible for household affairs. The Mongol men take the job of herding animals. The women take care of milking animals and they also are responsible to prepare food for the family. In the family, older children care for younger brothers and sisters.
