A French Atlantic resort began seeking applicants yesterday for a novel summer job: applier of suntan lotion. Les Sables d’Olonne, a beach and sailing haunt, is offering €850 (£750) a week to one man and one woman to rub lotion on to tourists from mid-July to late August.
The two “creamers”, as they are called in French, will be picked by a jury in June after pre-selection by voting on the internet. The winners are expected to be outgoing, with good speaking skills and some medical knowledge.
“We are recruiting two young people who will apply crème solaire and above all advise tourists on protection,” said François Boche, the director of the town’s tourist office. Free suncream will be handed out and priority will be given to children, in the presence of their parents.
A sun products brand is sponsoring the idea, which is planned to generate publicity for Sables d’Olonne.
The port-resort, which claims above-average hours of sunshine for the region, has made headlines with publicity stunts. Last year it guaranteed sunny holidays by offering a full refund for people who cancelled reservations because of a bad weather forecast not less than two days before their scheduled arrival.
In 2008 it turned a beached cargo ship, The Artemis, into a tourist attraction. The area is part of the mid-Atlantic region that was hit last month by storm flooding that killed 55 people.
The internet site for the creamer jobs opened yesterday. Candidates can apply at lejobdelete.com.
