Overview
Practicing the proper breathing patterns while swimming is important for developing not only your stroke, but also your stamina. However, what often goes overlooked is how to breathe after the swim is over. Learning how to breathe after you finish swimming will allow you to catch your breath and return your heart rate to normal if you happen to feel fatigued. The technique is very simple to perform and uses the weightlessness of the water to calm and relax you.
Step 1
Finish swimming and hold onto the edge of the pool with both hands.
Step 2
Take a deep breath and slowly lower yourself into the water.
Step 3
Blow the air out slowly through your nose as you extend your body downwards.
Step 4
Pull your body back up slowly while continuing to blow out the air through your nose.
Step 5
Pull your head up and out of the water and take another breath. Repeat the process until your heart rate has slowed and you have caught your breath.
