I first took an interest in you more than three decades ago,
A country small yet exquisite—
Bossed around by a big power at one point,
And later invaded by another.
The fluffy clouds over the Caribbean
Had wanted to see more democracy and order down below.
On my first visit in the new millennium,
I saw a country friendly and mature—
The Isle of Spice on the Atlantic,
A shining pearl like a postcard.
Inch by inch, you have come a long way on the road to independence,
A young country in search of better lives and more friends.
