英国翻译理论家Peter Newmark就说过：An idiom is a current and frequently used group of words whose meaning is not clear from the common meanings of its constituent words（所谓成语，是指目前仍常用的词组，不能清楚从其组成各词的常用意义得出其意思）。
Breath一词意思很多，基本意义是“呼吸”，但可引申转指“（说话的）语气”、“气味”、“生命”，乃至“琐事”等。含有breath一词的
成语很多，at a breath和in one breath是“一口气（说许多话或做完谋事）”，而in a breath却是“一瞬间”、“一刹那”的意思；take a breath 是“歇一口气”，take a deep breath意为“深深地吸一口气”，而take someone's breath away的意思却是“使某人大吃一惊”（有时away常省略掉），也可以说knock the breath out of someone。至于“喘不过气来”则是lose one's breath或be out of breath。
