标题: 9月10日英语故事：Water in the cup 杯中之水 [打印本页]

read the story carefully and then translate the phrases which are marked in red or write down what
you get from the story to gain the score. 试着翻译红色的部分或者发表自己的看法.

A group of working adults got together to visit their University lecturer. The lecturer was happy to see them , and conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

The lecturer just smiled and went to the kitchen to get an assortment of cups—some porcelain , some looked rather expensive and exquisite. The lecturer offered his former student the cups to get drinks for themselves.

When all the students had a cup in hand with water ,the lecturer spoke , “If you noticed ,all the nice looking ,expensive cups were taken up ,leaving behind the plain and cheap ones .While it is normal that you only want the best for yourselves ,that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you wanted was water, not the cup ,but we unconsciously went for the better cups ,”

Just like in life ,if life is water ,then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups .They are just tools to hold life ,but the quality of life doesn’t change.If we only concentrate on the cup ,we won’t have time to enjoy the water in it.

人生也是一样，如果生命是水,那么杯子就是工作、金钱和社会地位。他们是承载生活的工具,但是生活的质量并没有改变。如果我们将精力都集中到杯子上 ,我们就没有时间品尝水的味道。

这就像是生活，生活如水，而工作、钱以及社会地位都只是杯子而已，他们只是承载生活的工具，生活本身的质量不会因此而改变。如果我们一心只看见了杯子，那我们就没时间去品味水了。

This story reminds me of the saying "live to work" and "work to live". I guess the big picture in this world is so expressive that we kind of have to go with the stream in order to survive. Even if we sometimes realize that is not what we really want, we can not help it. Only when we become philosophers like this lecturers, coule we begin to enjoy life as life really is.

就像在生活中，假设生活是水，社会中的工作，钱财和职位是杯子，这都是生存的工具，但生活的质量不会改变，如果我们只看重杯子的话，那我们就没有时间去享受杯中水，去享受生活

通常而言，你只想要最好的，这就是你面临的问题和压力的根源。所有你想要的是水，而不是杯子，但是我们不知不觉却要更好的杯子。就像生活一样，如果生活是水，而工作，钱和地位是杯子。他们仅仅是维持生活的工具，但是生活的质量不会改变。如果我们只关注这个杯子，那将不能享受杯子里面的水。

这是正常思维自己都想要好的，这就是问题和压力的来源。你想要的是水而不是杯子，但是都会无意识的想要好的杯子。
