About London Mark Twain delivered this speech at a dinner given by the Savage Club in London, September 21, 1872. According to J. Henry Hager, who was elected to its membership that month, the Savage Club was formed for the exclusive benefit of working members of the literary, artistic, or journalistic guilds, and once rejected an application for membership from the Prince of Wales because he did not fit that criteria. It held its dinners at 5:00 P.M. on Saturday evenings.
