Celebration
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival was first held in 1963, but was halted during the Cultural Revolution, then revived in 1985. It is one of the largest ice and snow festivals in the world.
Bright Lights
The majority of the ice sculptures are illuminated by LED lights, creating what the Chinese call "ice lanterns".
Amphitheatre
The sculptures are based on historical architecture from around the world. This one is inspired by the Colosseum in Rome.
Slide
The festival attracts visitors from around the world not only for its sculptures but also for its winter activities. Tourists can ski, go to exhibitions, enjoy concerts and enter sporting competitions.
Great Wall
The ice blocks used to make the sculptures are taken from the Songhua River. This year, the structures use an estimated 160,000 cubic meters of ice.
Skyscraper
This year's edition of the festival kicked off on January 5th. Weather permitting, it will last about a month.
Pagodas
Deionised water is used to give the appearance of glass. The festival is expected to draw millions of tourists to Harbin. |
