A gun battle erupted in Mali's capital today as soldiers fought mutinous members of an elite paratroop unit. Initial reports say soldiers attacked paratroopers' camp in western Bamako after they refused an assignment to the front-line of the French-led offensive against Islamist militants in the north. The paratroopers, known as the Red Berets, were loyal to former president Amadou Toumani Toure, who was ousted in a military coup last March. In the north, military officials say a suicide bomber blew himself up near a group of soldiers, the first time that tactic has been used in Mali since the offensive began last month. Human Rights Watch is urging Kenya to crack down on rights abuses and enact promised political reforms ahead of its national elections in March.
