Working at a college with a preponderance of non-English-speaking students, my sister sometimes had difficulty in communicating with the newly arrived. Once as she was enrolling a young man, she reached a standstill at the question of birth date. No matter what words or motions she used, the young man remained puzzled. Finally, a Chinese student standing nearby asked my sister,"What do you need to know?" After my sister explained, the Chinese woman turned to the young man and hummed the first few bars of "Happy Birthday to you".
    His eyes lit up in recognition as he exclaimed,"May 12, 1985." The helpful student shrugged and said,"Same song, every country."
     
    在一所非说英语的学生占多数的大学工作，我的姐姐有时很难和新生交流。有一次，当她在为一位年轻人登记的时候，在生日的问题上，遇到了困难。无论怎么说，怎么表达，年轻人就是不理解。最后，一位站在旁边的中国学生问我姐姐，“你想知道什么？”我姐姐解释之后，这位中国妇女向年轻人啍了一段“祝你生日快乐”。
    明白了之后，他的眼睁一亮说，“1985年5月12日。”提供帮助的学生耸了耸肩说，“同一首歌，每个国家都这样。”
