The phone rang loudly next to her ear as she sat the computer. Sarah picked it up; hoping it wasn't for her, because she really didn't feel like talking to anyone. She uttered a monotonous, "Hello? "
"Hi Sarah!! This is Mindy! What's up?? Umm, the reason that I called was that I need help with the English assignment. I've been having trouble coming up with a topic."
Sarah's shoulders silently droop as she realizes that she has completely forgotten about the homework to witness or be a part of a situation and write it in down in great detail. She heaves a sigh. No matter, she will start the assignment when she gets off the phone.
As her best friend continues to talk about her topic ideas, Sarah's mind drifts. She thinks about how Mindy is moving 500 miles away in less than a month. She thinks about how much she'll miss her friend and how it won't be the same without her. And Sarah begins to cry. Not noisily, so Mindy will hear, but silently, the tears roll down her cheeks.
"So, do you have any idea what I should do about this assignment?" Mindy asks, bringing Sarah out of her fog. She answers her own question, suddenly exclaiming, " I know!! I'll describe what happened today in the lunch line! I just wanted to ring that Jennifer girl's neck!! SHE WAS SO RUDE!"
Sarah thinks back to earlier in the day when they had been in the lunch line, waiting patiently and a snotty girl pushed her way up in front of them, causing Mindy and Sarah to lose their place in line.
"That sounds like a good idea. I wish I'd thought of that." Sarah says softly. The conversation ends quickly after that and Sarah is feeling better. She is still sad that her best friend is moving, but she knows that they will keep in touch and always be close. At just that moment, Sarah is glad that Mindy called. She now has the perfect topic for her English assignment.
