我熄灭了灯，返回到床上，心里颤栗不安。久久躺在床上，眼睛盯着那一片漆黑，倾听着--不久我听到头顶处传来刺耳的声音，像是在地板上拖动一个笨重的躯体，忽然这身躯被扔在地上，窗户被震得摇晃起来。远处传来门低沉的撞击声。我注意到，在这些声音的间歇，有个鬼鬼祟祟的脚步声在走廊里悄悄地进出，在楼梯里悄悄地上下。有时这些声音靠近了我的门，在门口犹豫着，又离开了。我听到在远处的过道传来铁链的微弱的碰击声，这声音由远及近--当它疲倦地在楼梯里爬行着，
  I put out the light and returned to bed,palsied with fear.I lay a long time , peering into the darkness,and listening.-Then Iheard a grating noise overhead,like the dragging of a heavy body across the floor,then the throwing down of the body ,and the shaking of my windows in response to the concussion.In distant parts of the building I heard the muffled slamming of door.I heard, at intervals,stealthy footsteps creeping in and out among the corridors,and up and down the stairs.sometimes these noises approached my door,hesitated,and went away again.I heard the clanking of chains faintly ,in remote passages,and listened while the clanking grew nearer.
